Pattern is loosey based on the Umbilical Cord Hat from SnB, only I work it from the top down and make the i-cord into a loop.
Yarn is odd bits of Lion Brand Cotton Ease and Kitchen Cotton. When the babies started coming I needed to find some bright coloured washable yarn and clever old Jessamyn suggested I get myself down to P&S. That was a couple of years ago.
The $40 I spent there bought me 2 bags of yarn that I've since used in tonnes of baby items plus a couple of bags prooving that knitting doesn't have to be an expensive hobby, (craft/addition) - thanks sweetgirl!
Me old mate, Valda has requested some winter hats for my favorite model, Annabel. I'm thinking of adapting this pattern further by adding earflaps. I'll let you know how it goes....

Aw, they're cute. The stripes look fab.
P&S was the first yarn store I went to in New York -- I'm not sure why, since I lived in Morningside Heights. Took forever and I got lost. But the prices were worth it!
Hi
I found you via a 'random' search on the UK knitters ring?!
I love these hats, and wondered if they'd be easier enough for a beginner (that's me!), and where I might find a pattern - I'm not up to adapting a pattern yet, unfortunately!
Best wishes & thanks for such lovely pictures and ideas - I can see I'm going to be hooked!
Emma
Hello Emma - I hope you'll see this as I can't link directly to you!
Sorry for the time it took me to reply....been a bit busy :o(
The original hat pattern is a very easy one from the first Stitch n Bitch book. I adapted it slightly but the pattern as writtern is in a solid colour and very easy to follow.
Good luck and let me know if you saw this - thanks!
